Afghan spin prodigy Shafiqullah Ghafari, at the age of 21, has reportedly called quits on his career. The youngster shot to fame during the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he dismantled hosts South Africa with a six-fer in his side’s opening game of the tournament.

Ghafari quits cricket, report cites nepotism

As per latest development, Shafiqullah Ghafari has reportedly announced his retirement from Afghanistan cricket, citing nepotism within the country’s board.

A source seemingly close to the board stated that Ghafari joined a wave of young Afghan talents to call it quits at an early age. The source claimed that many up-and-coming Afghan cricketers are leaving their country after realising they are not getting their due rights from the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB).

The source further accused the ACB of prioritising their friends and family members in selection matters, all while ignoring the upcoming talents of Afghanistan cricket.

Notably, these allegations are emerging just a month after batting star Usman Ghani alleged corruption within the cricket board. In July this year, the cricketer revealed that he would take a break from the sport after expressing his frustration with the board’s selection policy.

Ghani was snubbed from Afghanistan’s white-ball touring party to Bangladesh, despite being part of his side’s 2-1 win against Pakistan earlier this year.

In a series of tweets, the youngster criticized ACB for his exclusion, stating that he tried meeting the chairman for clarification behind the snub but received no satisfactory response in return.
