Afghanistan penalized for breaching ICC Code of Conduct after defeat vs Zimbabwe

The Afghanistan cricket team has been penalized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during their one-off Test match against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club earlier this week. Apart from losing the match by an innings and 73 runs, the Afghanistan team also maintained a slow over-rate against the hosts.

Match referee Richie Richardson imposed a 25 percent fine on Afghan players after they were found five overs short of their target.

The Afghanistan team has been penalized 25 percent of their match fees by the ICC for maintaining a slow over-rate against Zimbabwe in Harare. Despite taking time allowance into consideration, ICC Match referee Richie Richardson found the Afghanistan team five overs short of their target.

On-field umpires Adrian Holdstock and Nitin Menon and third umpire Forster Mutizwa laid out the charges after the match. At a formal hearing, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi pled guilty to the offense and accepted the sanctions.

Afghanistan team also lost the match by an innings and 73 runs to hand Zimbabwe their first Test win at home after 12 years. Batting first, Afghanistan bundled out for just 127 courtesy of a five-wicket haul from Brad Evans.

Even though Ziaur Rahman picked up a sensational seven-fer in response, Zimbabwe still aggregated 359 to mount a huge 232-run first innings lead over the visitors. On Day 3, Afghanistan got blown away for just 159 in 43 overs, this time kneeling before Richard Ngarava (5-37) and Blessing Muzarabani (3-48).
