Australian wrist-spinner Adam Zampa has reportedly decided to skip the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), starting March 22. Zampa, who had been retained by inaugural season champions Rajasthan Royals (RR), has taken a sudden U-turn from his availability for the season ahead, reported Australia-based Code Sports.

According to the report, Zampa has told the Royals management and ownership group about his absence from the IPL 2024, with the cricketer eyeing workload management after undergoing immense physical and mental strain in a prolonged season, where he was part of Australia's ICC World Cup 2023 winning side.

After playing the quadrennial event in October-November, Zampa stayed put in India to be with an alternate T20I side picked by the Aussies for a five-match series played before the start of his new Big Bash League (BBL) campaign for Melbourne Renegades.

The 31-year-old rising bowler then took part in Australia's white-ball assignments at home against the West Indies and across the Tasman Sea in New Zealand, with T20 World Cup 2024 preparations attaining priority for the former champions of the biannual ICC tournament.

It seems the decision to skip the IPL 2024 is based purely on his intent to comeback absolutely fresh for the marquee assignment in the Caribbean & USA.

The move disrupts Royals' plans without a warning, though, as Zampa's presence would've further bolstered a spin attack also featuring great Ravichandran Ashwin and his India teammate Yuzvendra Chahal.

Picked at the IPL 2023 auction for INR 1.50 crores, Zampa had been retained by the franchise for the 2024 season with the Sanju Samson-led side hoping to end a 16-year-long drought and clinch their second trophy.
