One of the finest cricketing talents from across the globe in history to ever hold a bat, Abraham Benjamin De Villiers, known in short as AB de Villiers, has been an influential player ever since the beginning of his career and beyond it as well. The South African superstar who earned fame for his 360-degree shots around the ground is one of the most loved individuals in India, too.

De Villiers became a household name in India due to his pyrotechnics on the field with the bat when he represented his beloved Royal Challengers Bengaluru (previously Bangalore) during his time at the IPL (Indian Premier League).

Did AB de Villiers Actually Play Rugby?

The answer is yes. Being the multi-talented player he is, few know that the South African star was also a rugby player back in his school days. His school, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool who were termed Affies, was based in Pretoria, where a lot of other African superstars, namely Faf du Plessis, Jacques Rudolph, and Dewald Brevis, alongside Neil Wagner from New Zealand, were also enrolled.

Back in 2002, De Villiers featured in a clash during his school days, with the 10-numbered jersey on his back while playing at the fly-half position on the rugby field.

AB de Villiers Retirement

AB de Villiers' retirement from the international game in 2018 marked the end of an era, but not the end of his influence on the sport. He continued to grace the IPL with his presence for a few more seasons, finally bidding adieu after the 2021 edition. Since then, he has transitioned into a new phase of his career, actively engaging with fans through his YouTube channels and sharing his insights as a cricket commentator.
