Team India lost the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series by five wickets on a thrilling Day 5 against England at Headingley in Leeds. Despite defending 371 runs on the final day, India bowlers failed to contain rampaging Englishmen, largely led by opener Ben Duckett with his sublime 149.

Nonetheless, the match shattered numerous viewership records among fans in India, with JioHotstar hitting a record 89.1 million viewers and 13.7 billion watch minutes, the most ever for a Test match on digital.

India Vs England Set Record-Breaking Start To WTC 2025-27

India and England cricket teams set off their respective 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) campaigns on a record note, at least in terms of viewership numbers. As reported by News18, the match delivered historic numbers on JioHotstar, garnering 89.1 million viewers and a total watch time of 13.7 billion minutes, the highest ever for a Test match on digital.

The recent viewership numbers indicate a rising trend in digital consumption of red-ball cricket, reaffirming the enduring appeal of marquee Test rivalries and the growing dominance of streaming platforms like JioHotstar in the Indian sports broadcasting landscape.

Even the WTC 2025 final played between South Africa and Australia at Lord’s last month fetched a record live audience, albeit on television, for a non-India Test match on the Star Sports network. The match fetched 2.94 billion viewing minutes on the channel, and 225 million digital views, rivalling the 2023 final match between India and Australia.

Nonetheless, India’s five-match Test series against England will now continue with the second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham from July 2 onwards.
