The Indian team have just played Sri Lanka in an away ODI series, which they lost by a 2-0 margin. After this series, India have now just three games left before the all important ICC Champions Trophy slated to take place in the beginning of 2025.

So far, Indian have backed Shubman Gill as an ODI opener. But in the Sri Lanka series, Gill failed to delivery and this has given rise to questions over his spot in the team. Is it time for India to think of someone like Yashasvi Jaiswal for the marquee event, or at least give the southpaw a go before the tournament? Let us try and find an answer to this question analytically.

Jaiswal vs Gill - the question of intent

Shubman Gill had a real trouble to get off the blocks during the ODI series in Sri Lanka. He had a strike rate of just 61.29. The fact that he did not score big any of the games along with his strike rate issue created extra pressure on Rohit Sharma to stay ultra agrressive and in some cases throw away his wicket.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, on the other hand, could be refreshing in this case. He can play the role that Shikhar Dhawan played while opening the innings with Rohit Sharma. It was Dhawan who used to take up the role of the aggressor allowing Sharma to set down and play long knocks. Dhawan's style of play complimented to that of Rohit and hence the duo became a successful pair. Jaiswal can be given the same role and reduce a bit of pressure on Rohit uptop.

Jaiswal vs Gill - suitablity to Indian scheme of things

The Gautam Gambhir-era has just begun in Indian cricket. One thing has been noticeable, the Indian management is looking to stress on keeping a left-hand/right-hand combination throughout the batting line-up. Yashasvi Jaiswal's presence in the team will help India follow this tactic from the very beginning of their batting innings.

Jaiswal vs Gill - ability to impact a match with sustainable knocks

In the recent times, Shubman Gill has shown a tendency to throw away his wicket after a good start. This sometimes stunts the progress of the team. On the other hand, Yashashvi Jaiswal in his short international career has shown a great ability to convert his starts into big knocks. This would help the team in most cases to post a formidable target and challenge the opposition.
