The first T20I between West Indies and India was quite an exciting one where Windies manage to inch past India by just 4 runs. Both teams now move to Guyana from Trinidad for the second T20I and we can expect India to come back hard at Windies in this game.
However, there are some issues that India need to sort it out ahead of the second T20I as West Indies are a quality T20 unit and could create problems for India again.
3 Concerns for India Ahead Of 2nd T20I
Form Of Ishan Kishan In T20Is
Ishan Kishan was brilliant in ODI series and Test series on this tour and has the potential to create big impact in T20Is too. However, his form in T20Is has been a worry for sometime now. He has scored just 36 runs in his last 6 innings in T20Is with the highest score of just 19. His last fifty in the format came way back in June 2022 against South Africa and this is surely a concern for India as they look to adopt a new aggressive style in T20Is.
Also, there is Yashasvi Jaiswal sitting on the bench who was brilliant in IPL 2023 and has shown the potential to excel at international stage with brilliant century on Test debut. So, Ishan needs to deliver, as a good start in Powerplay is a critical part of any team's success in the T20 format.
Lack Of Depth In The Batting Department
This is an issue that has been haunting India's T20 team for quite a few years now. The world is moving towards an aggressive brand of cricket and we see many teams batting deep to give that extra freedom and cushion to their batters, however, India seem to be lacking in this department.
In the first T20I, Kuldeep Yadav batted at number 8, who has decent defensive skills, but he surely lacks the firepower that one needs in the T20Is. Lack of batting depth also forces other top order batters to play conservative cricket and it is high time, India find players who can use the long handle as well along with their bowling.
Inexperience At The International Level
India have decided to go with a rejuvenated young arsenal after the 2022 T20 World Cup and are hoping to deliver an aggressive brand of cricket to cope up with the demands of modern day cricket. However, in this phase of transition, where players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are absent from the T20 setup, there is a risk of failures with youngsters just finding their feet at the international level.
We saw a glimpse of that in the first T20I as Indian batters failed to assess the conditions and situation of the game in the run-chase. India would hope that they can learn from the mistakes they committed in the first T20I and comeback stronger in future with T20 World Cup in 2024 set to be played in similar conditions.
