Riyan Parag is always in the news for the variety of reasons and has often faced lot of criticism for his below-par performances in the IPL. However, in domestic cricket, he has scored tons of runs for Assam and recently in Deodhar Trophy was the leading run-getter with 354 runs in 5 matches at a fantastic average of 88.50.

The young star also picked 11 wickets with the ball and made sure that his all-round performances take his side, East Zone to the final of the Deodhar Trophy. In the final too, Riyan Parag was a lone warrior for his side with scintillating 95 and it seems that the Assam lad has finally started to live up to his potential.

Now, in a recent interview with Indian Express, Riyan Parag has opened up on his failures, his mindset and advice from none other than Virat Kohli.

Riyan said that he cannot reveal the whole chat but added that the star Indian batter told him to take the reality check and accept that it is a bad phase. Virat also told Riyan that one needs to believe in one's process and failures does not mean that one needs to change the process that has worked in past.

He added that IPL is a tournament where things go very fast and after couple of failures one tends to question oneself.

“Mai puri baat nahi bata paunga (I cannot tell you the exact conversation). He told me ‘something that has worked for half a year cannot be wrong after a few failures. What happens in the IPL is that the tournament goes on so fast that after failing two games, you start to question yourself. Everyone makes mistakes and I have made tons of them. Two-three games don’t go your way and you feel (the need) to change your process and work ethic,” Parag told Indian Express.

“It was him telling me that ‘take the reality check and accept that this is a bad phase but it doesn’t mean that you need to change the process that has been working for you’.”

Riyan stated that he worked a lot on his batting and is trying to take the game deep. He also mentioned that he has matured on and off the field and is bowling well too. Riyan also felt that he was a bit of reckless few years back and is now learning the tricks. Also, according to him his biggest challenge is consistency.

“I have worked a lot on my batting. I am trying to take the game deep. I have become more mature on and off the field. I have done a lot of bowling as well. I think a lot of work has been put into my skill, and the results are showing now. I think I was a little reckless a few years back. Now I am learning the tricks of the trade,” he says, adding that ‘the biggest challenge for any cricketer is consistency.”

Riyan Parag would be hoping to translate his Deodhar Trophy to other tournaments and we might just see the best of him in IPL 2024.
