SS-W vs MS-W Preview: Sixers Looking To Get Back To Winning Ways
The Sixers Women kicked off their season in style, clinching a thrilling three-wicket win over Melbourne Renegades. But in their last outing, they stumbled, falling short by 11 runs against the Adelaide Strikers Women.
Despite Ashleigh Gardner and Lauren Cheatle bagging four and three wickets, respectively, the pair were a tad expensive, along with skipper Ellyse Perry, who took two wickets but leaked runs. And Sophie Ecclestone, usually a wicket-taking machine, went wicketless. Safe to say, the Sixers will be hoping for a more disciplined show with the ball this time around.
On the batting side, Sarah Bryce delivered a stellar 62 off 44 balls, while Perry smashed a brisk 54 from just 28 balls. However, with Hollie Armitage, Ecclestone and Gardner falling flat, the Sixers’ batting lineup looked a bit like a one-woman band. Come Friday, they’ll want to turn up as they aim for their second win of the season with a more collective performance.
SS-W vs MS-W Preview: Stars Aiming For First Win
As for the Melbourne Stars Women, they find themselves at the penultimate spot in the points table after a dismal start. Their bowlers shone bright in their season opener, restricting Perth Scorchers Women to 122/8.
Sophie Day was on fire, snagging 3/21, with Kim Garth chipping in a handy 2/23. Marizanne Kapp, Annabel Sutherland, and Sasha Moloney each took a wicket to keep the Scorchers on a leash.
Unfortunately, the Stars’ batters didn’t rise to the occasion, with only Ines McKeon (50 off 43) showing some grit. Kim Garth chipped in with 10, but the rest of the lineup crumbled in single digits. The Stars will need their big names – Meg Lanning, Kapp, Rhys McKenna, and Tess Flintoff – to bring their A-game if they’re to break their duck and notch up their first win.
SS-W vs MS-W: A Balanced Surface Awaits
North Sydney Oval’s pitch has been fair game for both batters and bowlers as it offers swing for pacers with the new ball and a bit of grip for spinners. Batters can make merry once set, so anything over 160 could be a competitive total here. The captain winning the toss may very well bat first, hoping to set a target that’ll be hard to chase.
