Jasprit Bumrah is India’s greatest bowler across formats, and by the time he winds up his career, the Indian pacer will cement himself as one of the best pacers of all-time, and while he has done exceedingly well across formats since his debut, the year 2025 has been a bit harsh on him, especially in T20Is.

During the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia, Bumrah suffered a back injury, and the pacer was ruled out of the Champions Trophy, which India won. He did make his comeback in the IPL and was also picked in the Asia Cup squad, but Jasprit Bumrah post-injury looked vulnerable as batters found it easy to target him.

There is a contrasting difference in his T2OI numbers before and after injury, and in this piece, we aill analyse how the Indian pacer has fared in the game’s shortest format in the last two years.

(Bumrah T20I stats in 2024)

  • Before his back injury, Bumrah had an outstanding T20I year in 2024, and so much so that the pacer was adjudged the Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup as India captured the tournament.
  • In 8 T20I matches in 2024, Bumrah scalped 15 wickets, and had an economy rate of just 4.18 as batters found it almost impossible to tackle him.
  • There was a zip in his bowling and it was evident during the T20 World Cup as batters struggled to even touch his deliveries. However, things changed once he suffered the injury.

(Bumrah in T20Is in 2025)

  • There is a stark contrast in Bumrah’s T20I numbers in 2024 and 2025. While he dominated the batters in 2024, the same cannot be said about his performances this year.
  • In 11 matches played, he has only scalped 12 wickets, and the average has gone up from 8.27 in 2024 to 19.25 in the ongoing year. The strike rate is up, and the economy which was under 5 in 2024 has suddenly reached 6.96 in 2025.
  • Batters have targeted him easily, and it was again evident when Sahibzada Farhan took him to the cleaners in Asia Cup.

Why Bumrah's numbers have dipped in T20Is

  • Jasprit Bumrah’s struggles in T20Is this year are mainly due to his back injury, as it seems Bumrah has not fully recovered. Moreover, the increased workload to go along with fatigue/injury has led to his pace getting dropped, making it easier for the batters to play him.
  • Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, he was utilised smartly. Rohit used to make him bowl only two overs or a solitary over in the powerplay, thus keeping him fresh for the death overs, and also not allowing him to take on the dangerous opposition batters.
  • However, under Suryakumar Yadav, he has constantly bowled three overs inside the power play, which has led to expensive spells as he often comes up against aggressive batters.

Final verdict

While Bumrah still remains India’s most skillful and best bowler across formats, but his effectiveness has dipped in the T20Is as the batters have found it easy to play him, and the numbers have suggested that he has looked a pale shadow of his former self this year, and it all comes down to his usage in the powerplay and also the injuries the pacer suffered towards the end of 2024.
