On Wednesday, South Africa will lock horns with Ireland in the first One-Day International of the upcoming three-match series at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The T20I series between the two sides was fascinating, with both teams winning a game each to share the trophy.

The last few months haven't been worth remembering for South Africa in international cricket. After losing an ODI series against Afghanistan, the Proteas suffered a heartbreaking defeat versus the Irishmen in a T20I. Batting first, Ireland posted a commanding 195-run total, riding on Ross Adair's scintillating century. In response, South Africa finished on 185 for nine, losing the match by ten runs.

With their reputation at stake, South Africa would be desperate to start the ODI series on a winning note. As the stage is set for a high-voltage encounter, let's see how the surface at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi will behave throughout the contest.

Sheikh Zayed Stadium Abu Dhabi Pitch Report

The pitch at Sheikh Zayed Stadium will favour the batters in the first half. The pacers won't get any help from the surface, and the batters will enjoy their time in the middle. However, scoring against the older ball might be tough, as the spinners will get a hint of turn in the middle overs.

However, the pitch might show contrasting characteristics in the second half, as the fast bowlers are expected to get some seam movement under the lights. Statistically, teams batting first have won 32 ODIs as compared to only 18 by the chasing sides in Abu Dhabi. So, considering the track gradually gets tougher for batting, the toss-winner will likely bat first.
