Rohit, Kohli included; Bumrah likely to be rested for ENG ODIs [Source: @imRohit_SN, @CricCrazyJohns/X]
After crossing swords against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India will lock horns with England in an eight-match white-ball series at home. England's tour of India will comprise five T20Is and three ODIs, giving both teams a final opportunity to fine-tune their ODI squad before the all-important Champions Trophy.
India's ODI squad will be pretty different from the T20I team, as the hosts will be keen to bounce back after an underwhelming show in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under. So, as the Men in Blue gear up for their final dress rehearsal for the Champions Trophy, let's analyse and find out their probable squad for the home series.
Rohit, Gill, Kohli To Spearhead India's Top Order
Although Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been miserable on the Australian tour, he will likely be chosen as the skipper of the ODI team for the England series. In his last ODI series, Rohit hammered 157 runs on Sri Lanka's spin-friendly tracks at a superb average of 52.33 and a strike rate of 141.44.
His ability to take the opposition head-on has allowed Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli to play their natural game and anchor the innings. Thus, Rohit, Gill and Kohli will likely form India's top order, with the Men in Blue likely picking the dynamic Yashasvi Jaiswal as their third opener. Although he hasn't played an ODI, Jaiswal's red-hot recent form makes him a hot candidate to be chosen as the reserve opener role for the England series.
Pant, Iyer, Rahul To Form India's Middle Order
While Shreyas Iyer will likely be picked as India's prime middle-order batter at number four, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul are certain to be included as the wicketkeepers. If Rahul continues to keep wickets, Iyer might be preferred as India's number four batter over Pant, particularly in the first two matches. Having said that, don't be surprised if the Indian management decides otherwise and trusts Pant's aggressive game more than Iyer's gutsy stroke play in order to unsettle the opposition with a left-handed batter.
Pandya, Axar, Sundar In; Jadeja To Be Rested?
Veteran cricketer Hardik Pandya will be picked for the ODIs, playing as India's prime all-rounder in the series. Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has been prolific in the ongoing BGT, might earn his maiden ODI call-up as Pandya's backup, with Axar Patel playing as the spin-bowling all-rounder alongside Washington Sundar. Experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja might be rested, as it will allow India to test Sundar and Axar for the second spin-bowling all-rounder's role in the Champions Trophy.
No Bumrah; Siraj, Arshdeep To Lead Bowling Attack
India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has bowled a lot of overs in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This could be the reason why he might be rested for the England series to manage his workload before the Champions Trophy.
If Bumrah is rested, Mohammed Siraj will lead India's pace attack with Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, who will also audition for a spot in the Champions Trophy squad. On the other hand, if Kuldeep Yadav misses due to a recent injury, Varun Chakravarthy might be rewarded for his consistency in T20Is and receive an ODI call-up.
