Andre Russell in action for KKR [Source: AFP]
Andre Russell, arguably one of the best all-rounders in T20 cricket, has been one of the core members for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He has also been a key member of the Knight Riders franchise in different leagues - MLC, ILT20, and the CPL.
Known for his six-hitting prowess, Andre Russell is capable of winning games on his own from any situation with both bat and ball. We’ve seen him doing that in the IPL for years now.
The Jamaican all-rounder has been associated with KKR since 2014 and has scored 2593 runs in 110 innings at an average of 28.80 with an excellent strike rate of 175. Russell has picked up 122 wickets as well at an economy of 9.47 and a bowling strike rate of 13.70.
Despite all these numbers, Russell’s performance in the last edition of the IPL and in T20 cricket throughout 2025 hasn’t been up to his standards.
The star all-rounder was retained for INR 12 crores ahead of IPL 2025. Now, since the date to announce your retentions is near and the IPL 2026 auction in December 2025, the question arises: should KKR let go of Andre Russell?
Factors that could lead to Russell's release from KKR
First and foremost, Russell is 37 years old, and with age not on his side, Kolkata may look to explore other options. It’s quite evident that Russell hasn’t been in the best of form lately with both bat and ball.
Andre Russell in IPL 2025
| Criterion | Data |
| Innings | 10 |
| Runs | 167 |
| Bat Average/SR | 18.6/163.70 |
| Wickets | 8 |
| Bowl average/SR | 27.1/13.6 |
| Economy | 11.94 |
As the numbers reflect, Russell scored only 167 runs in 10 innings, including only one fifty in IPL 2025, and he was expensive with the ball, going at an economy of almost 12. More importantly, his numbers in different T20 leagues in 2025 till now aren’t that great either.
Andre Russell in all T20s in 2025
| Criterion | Data |
| Innings | 37 |
| Runs | 516 |
| Bat Average/SR | 19.1/152.70 |
| Wickets | 32 |
| Bowl average/SR | 29.5/16.9 |
| Economy | 10.47 |
Considering his batting position, one can’t expect Russell to make big scores, but he’s failed to consistently play those impactful cameos as the finisher of the side. Bowling-wise too, he has been on the expensive side.
On top of all this, he has had fitness issues in the past, which have affected his bowling fitness, and at the age of 37, he might not bowl consistently at the pace that he used to.
Budget and availability of better options
Another big reason why the 3-time IPL champions may look to let go of Andre Russell is that he’s retained for INR 12 crores. For that money, there are many other viable options that the Knight Riders can look for.
Some of them are:
- Cameron Green
- Azmatullah Omarzai
- Jamie Overton
- Sikandar Raza
- Glenn Maxwell
- Aaron Hardie
- Mitchell Owen
- Rachin Ravindra
- Liam Livingstone
Almost all these players are expected to be released by their respective franchises, barring Liam Livingstone, while KKR is expected to release Venkatesh Iyer to free up their purse, and they can surely go all-out for Cameron Green.
Another like-for-like replacement for Russell can be Jason Holder, who has previously played for KKR. Holder has improved his batting and death bowling recently and can be a good fit.
KKR can get one of these players cheaply compared to Andre Russell’s retention price.
Factors that could lead to Andre Russell's IPL retention
Now let’s talk about things in favour of Andre Russell. The upcoming auction in December 2025 will be a mega auction, so there won’t be a lot of quality players available, and Andre Russell, despite his age and form, is currently amongst the best in the world.
Doing what he does is a very difficult role for any player and Russell, with all his experience is a proven match-winner.
While KKR is expected to have a purse to target Cameron Green, there’s no guarantee that they’ll get him. With a new coach at the helm in Abhishek Nayar, the management may look to back their star all-rounder at least till the next mega auction.
Final Verdict
Considering all the factors, it is likely that KKR won’t release Andre Russell ahead of IPL 2026, but his age, form, and price tag are certainly a few things that the management will think about.
One possible solution is to release Andre Russell and buy him back in the auction, but since it’s not a mega auction, there are chances that his price may go beyond INR 12 crores, or KKR may even fail to get him back.
It is most likely that KKR will look to release Venkatesh Iyer and target Cameron Green, especially with Shane Watson appointed as the assistant coach.
So, a bold step will be to release Russell and get someone else to replace him. The Kolkata-based franchise already has Ramandeep Singh, who has shown that he can excel in the finisher’s role, and if they can get someone like Green, Maxwell, Livingstone, or even Rachin Ravindra, etc., they will still have a decent purse to explore other options and fill other loopholes in the side.
