The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering strengthening Gautam Gambhir’s coaching staff for the Indian men’s cricket team. After a recent slump in Test cricket performances, the BCCI is looking to appoint a dedicated batting coach. As per reports, this move aims to sharpen the batting department and ensure the team stays on track for future challenges.
Here, we look at three strong contenders who could take up the role of India’s new batting coach.
1. VVS Laxman
VVS Laxman is a frontrunner for the position due to his extensive coaching experience. The former Indian cricketer has already served as a backup head coach on several occasions, stepping in during Rahul Dravid’s tenure when India faced lower-ranked teams.
Currently the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Laxman has been deeply involved in grooming young talent. In 2024, he led the Indian team as head coach during their tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa for T20I series. His familiarity with the players and solid rapport in the dressing room make him a strong candidate.
Laxman’s technical understanding of batting and mentorship qualities align perfectly with the requirements of a batting coach. His past contributions suggest he can be an asset to Gautam Gambhir’s support staff.
2. Rahul Dravid
When it comes to coaching roles, Rahul Dravid’s name always stands out. Known as “The Wall” for his incredible batting consistency, Dravid has a stellar record as a coach. Under his guidance, India won the T20 World Cup in 2024, along with several other key achievements.
Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach from 2021 to 2023 was highly successful. During his time, India ranked No. 1 in both ODI and T20I formats and reached multiple ICC finals, including the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup.
Although Dravid’s contract ended in late 2023, the BCCI extended it for six months to cover the T20 World Cup 2024. With his deep knowledge of Indian cricket and strong chemistry with players like Rohit Sharma, he could seamlessly transition into the batting coach role, even if temporarily.
3. Virender Sehwag
Another exciting option is the ever-dynamic Virender Sehwag. Known for his fearless batting during his playing days, Sehwag’s aggressive style could bring a fresh perspective to the Indian batting unit.
Sehwag has prior coaching experience, having served as a mentor for Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) in the IPL until 2018. His ability to balance aggression with consistency makes him a unique candidate.
Moreover, Sehwag has openly expressed interest in coaching roles, including becoming the team’s batting coach. His experience, combined with his ability to motivate players, makes him a strong contender.
