Sri Lanka (SL) and Australia (AUS) are set to square off in the first ODI of their two-match series on February 12 at the iconic R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The high-octane SL vs AUS 1st ODI will kick-off at 10:00 AM IST.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka might be coming off a 2-0 Test series whitewash against Australia but ODIs are a whole different story. The Lions have been a force to reckon with in the 50-over format, currently riding high on a 10-match winning streak. They have dominated bilateral series at home, winning six on the trot. Despite Australia’s recent success in Tests, Sri Lanka remains a serious threat on their home turf.

Their top order, led by Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, and Charith Asalanka, forms a solid backbone for the batting lineup. Add to that the deadly spin duo of Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana, and you’ve got a team perfectly built for the turning tracks of Colombo.

Australia

Australia enters the ODIs full of confidence after a dominant Test series win. They sealed the second Test with a comfortable 9-wicket victory with Steve Smith and Alex Carey scoring brilliant centuries. The first Test was even more one-sided as they wrapped it up with an innings and 242-run triumph.

However, ODIs present new challenges for the visitors. The absence of skipper Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood leaves a hole in the bowling attack. Mitchell Starc will shoulder the responsibility backed by Nathan Ellis and Sean Abbott. The batting will be led by Steven Smith, Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell whereas the likes of Marnus Labuschagneand Josh Inglis will need to step up and give Australia a strong start to the series.

R Premadasa Stadium Pitch Report: Is It Batting Or Bowling Friendly?

The R. Premadasa Stadium has always been a spinner’s track. The surface offers sharp turns and variable bounce, especially in the second half of the game. Early on, it’s relatively easier for batters with consistent bounce and fewer cracks to deal with.

As the game progresses, it’s a different story. The pitch begins to break down with visible cracks and unpredictable bounce making life difficult for the batters. Spinners will be licking their lips as the ball grips and turns sharply.

The average first-innings score here is 231 and teams batting first have a better chance of winning. Toss will be crucial as both captains will aim to bat first.

Players To Watch Out For At R Premadasa Stadium

Travis Head

  • Travis Head has been Australia’s rock in recent ODIs. In his last four outings, he has amassed a whopping 248 runs at an average of 82.67 and a strike rate of 120.97; numbers that speak for themselves. He’s not just about big runs; it’s the way he scores them that makes him dangerous.
  • Head loves to take the attack to the bowlers, often throwing them off their lengths with aggressive stroke play. If he gets going, it’s game over for the opposition. His ability to dominate in the powerplay and build big partnerships will be important for Australia, especially on a tricky Colombo pitch where scoring freely becomes difficult later in the innings.

Kusal Mendis

  • Kusal Mendis has been a standout performer for Sri Lanka, scoring 406 runs in his last nine matches at an average of 58 and a strike rate of 97.83. He’s the glue that holds Sri Lanka’s top order together
  • His ability to rotate the strike and find the boundary with ease makes him a nightmare for opposition bowlers. If he gets his eye in, Australia’s bowlers could be in for a long day.

Maheesh Theekshana

  • Maheesh Theekshana is Sri Lanka’s secret weapon with the ball. In his last eight matches, he’s bagged 17 wickets at an economy rate of 4.68 and a strike rate of 20.05—impressive numbers for any spinner.
  • Theekshana brings mystery to the table with his variations which makes it tough for batters to pick him. On a turning track like Premadasa, Theekshana is expected to be Sri Lanka’s game-changer.

P.S: Apart from these players, the eyes will be on Charith Asalanka, Dunith Wellalage, Jeffrey Vandersay, Steve Smith & Mitchell Starc.
