Why Samson's exclusion will hurt India [Source: @Saabir_Saabu01/X.Com]
The India squad for Champions Trophy 2025 will be announce in the next couple of days and the buzz has started related to which players will be selected and who will be the unlucky one's to miss out on a place in the squad. India has plethora of talent, but only a handful of players will board the flight to Dubai for the mega event, and hence, quite a few of them will miss out.
As per reports, Sanju Samson is unlikely to feature in the India squad for the Champions Trophy. He recently faced disciplinary issues and was in the limelight for all the wrong reasons. However, if the selectors look at the broader picture, his inclusion is a must and here's why.
3) 510 runs, average of 56!
Sanju Samson has got limited opportunities in ODIs, and he has grabbed it with both hands. The Kerala batter has amassed 510 runs in 16 matches at an average of 56. These are world-class numbers and his credentials shouldn't be denied ahead of the selection meeting.
In tough situations, Samson has delivered the goods in ODIs and should be ahead in the pecking order.
2) Scored a century in his last ODI
How many times has it happened in the past that a player scores an ODI century and then gets neglected for the next series?. This has happened with Samson as he last played an ODI Vs South Africa at Paarl and scored a brilliant series-defining hundred.
He was ignored for the ODIs Vs Sri Lanka last year and now reports have surfaced that he might be omitted from the Champions Trophy squad. He was instrumental in India's ODI performance vs South Africa in that series and India needs more match-winners in the squad for the mega event.
1) Has performed batter than Rishabh Pant in ODIs
In Tests Rishabh Pant is the undisputed starter, but in the ODIs, he is yet to establish himself. Reports state that KL Rahul and Pant will be the two keepers in the squad, but if we look at the stats, they tell a completely different story.
While Samson averages 56 in ODIs, Pant, on the other hand has played 31 ODIs and averages a mere 33. For someone who has gotten a longer rope than Samson, the stats just doesn't justify his place in the side and hence, the selectors should take a bold call on including him in the side.
