Mark Wood is a name that can scare even the best of the batters in the world with his raw pace. England would have had high hopes for the fast bowler as he could have added that X-factor to the English bowling with his face.
However, the latest developments around the pacer will not ring happy bells for management. During the ongoing match against Afghanistan, Wood looked uncomfortable in his delivery stride while bowling the eighth over of the innings.
Although he completed the over, Wood left the field immediately after that. There is no official update on his injury yet. However, if things go south and Mark Wood is ruled out of the tournament, here are three replacements England could think of if they qualify for the top four.
3. Olly Stone
The right-arm pacer could be a good replacement for Mark Wood in the English side. Olly Stone does not have great numbers to show in the ODI format so far. But Stone has the ability to adapt to the different situations of the game and impact it in his own way.
In 10 ODI matches so far in his career, Stone has picked up only nine wickets with an economy of over 6 runs per over.
2. Ollie Robinson
Ollie Robinson has not yet played in ODIs. However, in Test cricket he has looked good with the ball. He has shown his effectivity with both the old and the new ball. Robinson could be a very impactful replacement for England if Mark Wood gets ruled out at this stage of the tournament.
1. Matthew Potts
Matthew Potts could be the best replacement for Wood. Potts has impressed with his bowling in the international stage already. Besides in List A cricket, the right-arm pacer has shown good conistency and effectivitly. In 19 matches he has picked up 26 wickets while having an economy of less than 6 runs per over. Potts could be the bowler who turns around the tide for the English bowling if Wood does not participate further in the tournament.
