Jasprit Bumrah signalled India's fightback against England on Day 3 of the Rajkot Test by packing overnight batter Joe Root. Root fell prey to his own improvisation, as he was caught out by Yashasvi Jaiswal at slips while trying to reverse-ramp the Indian paceman.

Regardless, Bumrah's timely strike helped him get the senior English batsman for the ninth time in his Test career and the 13th time overall in international cricket. In doing so, the Indian pace legend levelled with Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood for the most success against Root and is currently just a wicket away from Pat Cummins.

Bumrah closes in on Root’s Ashes rival Pat Cummins

Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Joe Root for the third time in this series and for the ninth time in his Test career after the latter was found guilty of over-improvising in the all-important Rajkot Test. The two cricketers first came into collision in Test clothing back in 2018, i.e., a year after they first squared off in ODIs and T20Is.

So far, Bumrah has packed Root 13 times across all international formats, including thrice in ODIs and once in T20 internationals.

At this stage, only Australian speedster Pat Cummins has enjoyed more success against Joe Root, having accounted for the wicket of his premier Ashes rival 14 times as opposed to Jasprit Bumrah's 13. Here is a look at the top five bowlers with the most success against the Englishman in international cricket:

  • Pat Cummins - 14 (39 innings)
  • Jasprit Bumrah - 13 (29 innings)
  • Josh Hazlewood - 13 (42 innings)
  • Trent Boult - 12 (34 innings)
  • Mitchell Starc - 11 (45 innings)

Jasprit Bumrah's timely strike against Joe Root was followed by two quick wickets by Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav, including the prized scalp of overnight centurion Ben Duckett.

Earlier in the match, Team India tallied 445 in their first innings off the back of centuries from Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja.
