The mega auction for IPL 2025 is all set to be held on November 24 and 25 and the excitement around the event is increasing with each passing day. The retention list of all franchises is out, and there are plenty of exciting players who have been retained. However, there are also players who have missed out despite their world-class quality as the new criterion for an uncapped player made things more interesting.
An Indian player who has not played international cricket for five or more years qualified to be selected as an uncapped player and that has enabled franchises to select some big names as their uncapped players. The biggest name to be included in the uncapped retention category is MS Dhoni. CSK has retained him for 4 Crore which is way less than the player of his stature normally would get while RCB have retained Yash Dayal in the similar uncapped category. So, let's see which of the two is a better pick as an uncapped retained player.
MS Dhoni vs Yash Dayal: Who Will Be More Useful In IPL 2025?
MS Dhoni is now 43-year-old, and though there were question marks over his return as a player for IPL 2025, he is all set to sizzle in CSK colours again. However, his fitness for surviving the whole season is bit of a worry and we could see his limited participation in the upcoming season. He would most probably don the finisher role, and he did well in the last season by scoring his 161 runs at a strike rate of 220.55.
However, he has hardly batted for more than four overs in the last few seasons, and that lessen his utility as a player. Since 2020, the most runs MS Dhoni has scored in a season are 232 which speaks a lot about the quantity of time he has spent on the batting crease and that could be a bit of worry for CSK. He would be of great help from behind the stumps for the captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, but whether he can keep wickets in all the games is still a big question.
Yash Dayal, on the other hand, is a rising star and recently got his maiden T20I call-up as well. He did brilliantly for RCB in the last season with 15 wickets, and we can expect him to grow from strength to strength with more experience coming his way. He can bowl both with the new ball and at the death, which makes him a hot asset, and with age on his side, he looks a better pick as an uncapped player than MS Dhoni. One of the major reason he can be considered as a better pick is that he is an active cricketer who would be in the groove coming into the IPL, while MS Dhoni only plays IPL and with age and injury problems surrounding him, RCB seem to have a made better choice on the cricketing front.
