The defending IPL champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) had assembled a strong squad, but that was disbanded ahead of the mega auction last month. A lot of key players, including their skipper, Shreyas Iyer departed and joined the other teams.

As a result, the KKR side had to build their team from the scratch and interestingly have added some valuable names in the squad. However, their biggest headache ahead of the next season would be to appoint a skipper. In this piece, we look at 3 probable candidates to become the new KKR captain.

3) Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane was a controversial pick in the mega auction by KKR, but it seems KKR had a plan to appoint an experienced captain for next season. He has prior experience of leading an IPL side and also leads Mumbai in the domestic setup.

He is a calm headed person and will be an influential figure in the KKR dressing room. Plus, Rahane could be used as a short-term captaincy option as KKR will look to groom someone else for the long-term role.

2) Venkatesh Iyer

Eyebrows were raised when KKR bought Venkatesh Iyer for 23.75 crore, but it seems it was a tactical move as he can be a brilliant captaincy choice. Perhaps he could follow Shreyas Iyer's footsteps and could be that energetic, young leader which the KKR side needs.

He has ample IPL experience and when you spend such a big amount on a player, you expect them to fulfil greater roles, and for Iyer, that role is perhaps to lead KKR next season.

1) Rinku Singh

An out of the box thinking, but Rinku Singh could be a surprise choice for the captaincy role. He is an excellent cricketer under pressure and T20 cricket and captaincy requires you to be under constant pressure.

Hence, to fulfil the role and to reward Rinku for his excellent services, KKR could take a dramatic turn by appointing Rinku as their new skipper ahead of the next season.
