Gujarat Titans (GT) outclassed the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader by seven wickets and five balls to spare. Under the leadership of Shubman Gill, GT won their second home game after restricting SRH to below-par 162/8 on the back of Mohit Sharma’s three-fer. The top four comprising Shubman Gill, Wriddhiman Saha, B Sai Sudharsan and David Miller sealed the deal comprehensively and accumulated four points in three matches for their team.

Let us have a quick look where the Sunrisers Hyderabad lost the plot.

When the Titans needed 49 runs from the last 30 balls with set batters Sai Sudharsan and David Miller at either ends, Pat Cummins’ move to bring Mayank Markande changed the complexion of the game.

The wrist spinner came to bowl against two left-handed batters, against the match-up and leaked 24 runs in the over. Miller hit two fours and a six while Sudharsan smashed a six over cow corner to curtail the equation down to 25 needed off four overs in a space of six deliveries. With eight wickets in hand, the Titans chased down the remaining runs with ease.

In a T20 game where anchors are considered backdated, one cannot score runs less than run-a-ball or even less than a strike rate of 125. Three SRH batters- Mayank Agarwal, Aiden Markram and Shahbaz Ahmed struck below 110 against the Titans on Sunday.

Mayank Agarwal faced ten dots in his 17-ball 16 that built more pressure on his partner Travis Head who ultimately got out on 19 after the powerplay. Even Aiden Markram failed to strike over run-a-ball falling cheaply for 19-ball 17 with no boundaries under his name. While Abdul Samad tried to maximise the slog overs, Shahbaz Ahmed failed to get going scoring 20-ball 22 in the end.

No Pat Cummins with the new ball

Captain Cummins seems to be trusting himself more with the old ball than the new ball. Although he has been economical and picking up odd wickets, this is not helping SRH’s cause. With Marco Jansen, Fazalhaq Farooqi benched and Bhuvneshwar Kumar looking off-colour, Pat Cummins could have taken the new ball and challenge the opposition top-order.

There shouldn’t be doubt on Cummins’ ability with the new ball and how effective he can be. With enough options in Markande, Shahbaz, Jaydev Unadkat and part-timers, a couple of overs from Cummins with the new ball could actually push the opposition on the back foot, thereby unsettling the counterparts from the start itself.
