The Delhi Capitals faced off against the Chennai Super Kings in the 13th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) at Vizag on the 31st of March. The Capitals picked up their first win of the season with a clinical show from their bowlers. 

The home team outdid the Chennai Super Kings in almost all aspects of the game. DC batted first in the game and was carried through by a solid top-order performance. They posted 191/5 in 20 overs. Rishabh Pant was clever in using his bowlers from the beginning of the second innings, which meant CSK was put on the back foot pretty early in the chase. Even though Rahane, Daryl Mitchell, and MS Dhoni tried to get near the target, CSK fell short by 21 runs. 

The biggest spot on CSK's performance was Ravindra Jadeja's flop show with both the bat and the ball. He is a big part of CSK's plan in every game because of his natural ability to be impactful with all three of the game's trades. Jadeja being off-colour was one of the prime reasons behind CSK's first defeat in IPL 2024. 


Why Jadeja's poor show was critical for CSK?

  • Ruturaj Gaikwad introduced Jadeja into the attack after the powerplay, hoping he would at least stem down the run flow even if he did not pick up the wickets. However, the experienced all-rounder failed to adjust his speed and lengths as per the nature of the wicket and was taken to the cleaners. Jajdeja conceded 43 runs off his four overs and managed a single wicket only. This performance from such a vital cog in the mechanism was one of the prime reasons Chennair Super Kings were put on the back foot.
  • When Jadeja came out to bat, CSK needed 90 runs off 38 deliveries at 14.21 runs per over. At this stage, the southpaw played a knock of 21 runs from 17 deliveries. When it was required to score at a strike rate of nearly 250, Jadeja achieved just 123.53. Jaddu's failure to get the big shots away and even maintain a strike rotation put CSK way behind in the game, ultimately leading them to a defeat.
