India have just completed a convincing win over Bangladesh at Chennai in the first of the two-match Test series. The margin of 280 runs is now the highest win by runs for India against Bangladesh.

In the first Test, we saw a complete team performance, with different players standing up at various stages to earn the victory for the home team. However, while some of the players excelled, others failed to deliver as expected. In this article, we will rate the performance of the Indian players in the match.

Rohit Sharma - 4/10

Performance - 6 (19) and 5 (7)

The Indian skipper failed to provide the team with a start in both innings. Rohit Sharma seemed to be struggling with adjusting his game to the longer format after a long absence from it. However, his captaincy was spot-on in most cases; hence, his rating is 4/10 for the game.

Yashasvi Jaiswal - 6/10

Performance - 56 (118) and 10 (17)

The young Indian opener played a gutsy knock under pressure in the first innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal held the fort at one end while other top-order batters failed to deliver in the face of some hostile bowling by the Bangladesh pacers. However, it would have been better if he had converted his half-century into a big score or came up with an impactful knock in the second innings.

Shubman Gill - 7/10

Performance - 0(8) and 119*(176)

Shubman Gill threw away his wicket amidst a storm the Indian team was going through with a casual shot in the first innings. However, the young batter redeemed himself in the second innings with a graceful century, setting the stage for the massive Indian win.

Virat Kohli - 3/10

Performance - 6 (6) and 17 (37)

The star Indian batter fell to his old weakness of outside the off-stump delivery in the first innings. It looked like an irresponsible shot from someone of Virat Kohli’s stature, considering the situation and the playing conditions at the stage. However, in the second innings, things looked better for Kohli before he was adjudged LBW despite his edging the ball. The star Indian batter failed to recognise that he edged the ball and walked out without taking the review.

Rishabh Pant - 8/10

Performance - 39 (52) and 109 (128)

What Rishabh Pant did in the first Test against Bangladesh will go down in history books as one of the greatest comebacks in the game. Amidst the turmoil in the first innings, Pant stabilised the ship with Jaiswal and set the stage for the big Jadeja-Ashwin partnership. He followed this resilience knock up with a trademark counter-attacking century in the second innings,, playing a crucial role in India's huge target for Bangladesh in the fourth innings. However, in the first innings, Pant could have shown more resilience, converting the start into a big innings.

KL Rahul - 4/10

Performance - 16 (52) and 22 (19)

The Indian middle-order batter tried to put up a fight for the team in the first innings but failed to go beyond a start. However, in the second innings, KL Rahul came up with a short cameo that was well-suited to the situation in which he came out to bat.

Ravindra Jadeja - 9/10

Performance - 86 (124) | 2/19 and 3/58

Ravindra Jadeja combined with Ravichandran Ashwin to form an epic 199-run partnership in the first innings. This partnership got India to a formidable total of 376 runs in the first innings, allowing them to take a big lead. Besides his brilliant batting display, Jadeja played the role required of him with the ball.

Ravichandran Ashwin - 10/10

Performance - 113 (133) | 0/29 and 6/88

Ravichandran Ashwin walked out to bat in the first innings when India were struggling at 144/6. At that stage, a counter-attacking knock of 113 off 133 deliveries bailed the team out of pressure and put them ahead in the game. However, Ashwin’s magic did not stop here; in the second innings of Bangladesh, the off-spinner weaved his spin web. He picked up six wickets and emerged as the destructor in chief of the Bangladesh batting.

Jasprit Bumrah - 7/10

Performance - 4/50 and 1/24

Jasprit Bumrah did his job perfectly as the leader of the Indian pace contingent in the match. His lethal spell in the first innings scrambled the Bangladesh top order and helped India take a lead of over 200 runs. Although he did not pick up the wickets in the second innings, Bumrah ensured he put pressure on the opposition early.

Akash Deep - 6/10

Performance - 2/19 and 0/20

Akash Deep played a small but important role with the bat in the first innings, stretching the Indian innings longer. He also looked impressive with the ball and aided Bumrah with an accurate spell, creating pressure on the batters.

Mohammed Siraj - 4/10

Performance - 2/30 and 0/32

In the first innings, even with the conditions suiting his bowling style, Mohammed Siraj failed to provide the initial breakthroughs. He picked up an important wicket of Najmul Hossain Shanto in the first innings, but in the second innings, the pacer failed to impress as he returned empty-handed in his ten overs.
