Shreyas Iyer is one of the few players who appears to enjoy being watched when they are batting at their best. However, due to frustrating injuries, the 28-year-old has been sorely missed in Indian cricket since the beginning of 2023.

Shreyas Iyer earned a staggering INR 2.6 crore from a base price of INR 10 lakh, making him the highest-paid uncapped player at the 2015 IPL auction. He immediately made an impact, scoring 439 runs during the season to take home the Emerging Player of the Year trophy. 

From that point forward, Iyer keeps moving upward and forward without stopping.

Shreyas made his debut for India against New Zealand in Delhi in November 2017. It was a T20I match, and he received his first ODI opportunity against Sri Lanka a month later.

Although Shreyas' T20I records are not stellar, he has maintained his consistency in ODIs ever since his debut. That's why at one point it seemed India had finally found the perfect No. 4 after almost a decade of searching.

However, his performance in 2023, up until the first ODI against Australia, is disappointingly underwhelming. Over the course of five innings, he has only averaged 22.20 runs, totalling 111 runs.

Strengths:

• Ability to seamlessly rotate strikes: It is crucial to consume fewer dot deliveries during ODIs in order to avoid pressure from your partner and the team. Shreyas is an architect of it, and his 47.2% of dot deliveries in ODIs speak volumes. To demonstrate how crucial the dot percentage is in ODIs, consider that Virat Kohli, arguably the best ODI batsman of the modern era, has a dot percentage of 45%.
• Can expertly maneuver the spinners: In ODIs, Shreyas Iyer has a strike rate of 103.3 and an average of 70.6 against spinners. When playing against the wizards, his dot percentage drops to 41.6%, which shows how well he can bat against them in particular. It is crucial to tackle effectively against spinners in the subcontinental conditions, and Shreyas is one of the best at it.

Weaknesses:

• Problems with bouncers: Shreyas' tackling against the fast bowlers, especially the bouncers, is his main worry. Since IPL 2022, the opposition has routinely gone short against him and requested a hit. Most of the time, Shreyas' attempts to handle it ended in abject failure until he sustained an injury.
• Injury-prone: In the past, injuries hindered Shreyas' good form significantly. He had surgery in London in April and remained there for three weeks afterward so that the medical professionals could assess his recovery before enrolling in the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for a three-month rehabilitation.

Opportunities:

• To prove himself in his maiden ODI World Cup at home: With this being Shreyas' first ODI World Cup, he has the ideal chance to shine in front of the home crowd. Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav are both vying for his spot, but there is no denying that he is the batsman of choice in the perfect scenario. Due to his past success, he will undoubtedly get one or two games' worth of a head start on the competition.

Threats:

• Not much game time: Due to a long-lasting back injury, Shreyas has not played as much recently. Therefore, it is obvious that he will be under pressure to perform to his best given the magnitude of the World Cup.
