Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is scripting one of the most remarkable comebacks in IPL 2024. After losing seven out of their first eight games, RCB has won five consecutive matches and is now in contention for the playoffs.

With just one game to go, they will face mighty Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at their home turf, Chinnaswamy Stadium. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru still needs more than just a win to secure a playoff spot. They require additional effort and a stroke of luck to qualify for the playoffs.

Equation for RCB against CSK to qualify

For RCB, the scenario is quite simple. If they bat first, they must secure a win by a margin of 18 runs or more. Alternatively, if they are chasing, they need to reach their target within 18.1 overs to get ahead of CSK in table.

RCB simply needs to surpass CSK in net run rate and  hope for either LSG or SRH to fail to qualify.

The IPL 2024 league stage showdown

On May 18th, in match 68 of the IPL, Royal Challengers Bangalore will face Chennai Super Kings in what could potentially be an eliminator. CSK is currently third on the table with 7 wins in 13 games, while RCB has 6 wins in 13 games. CSK has a net run rate (NRR) of 0.528, whereas RCB's NRR is 0.387.

Another significant contender in the playoff race is Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). SRH has won 7 out of 12 games so far in the IPL. If they win their remaining 2 games, they will easily qualify for the playoffs.

However, if they lose both games, there is a chance that even if CSK loses to RCB in a margin that would put RCB into playoffs, they could still qualify. But if SRH wins one game out of their remaining two, NRR will play a crucial role. SRH currently has an NRR of 0.406.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has two games left, and winning both will greatly improve their chances of making it to the playoffs. However, after the recent heavy defeat to SRH, LSG's net run rate has taken a hit.

Delhi Capitals (DC) find themselves in a similar situation. Despite having six wins in 13 games, their net run rate is considerably lower compared to other playoff contenders.
