Gujarat Titans (GT), former IPL champions, were in a spot of bother as Hardik Pandya had moved to Mumbai Indians the previous season. While Shubman Gill was an obvious successor, the results went against him as GT finished at bottom three in IPL 2024. Hence, heading into the IPL 2025 mega auction, GT think tank will prioritise a balanced and powerful lineup.

GT Retention List & Remaining Purse

Salary
Rashid Khan1INR 18 crore
Shubman Gill2INR 16.50 crore
Sai Sudharsan3INR 8.50 crore
Rahul TewatiaUncappedINR 4 crore
Shahrukh KhanUncappedINR 4 crore

Money Spent: INR 51 crore

Remaining Purse: INR 69 crore

At the October 31 retention deadline, Gujarat Titans retained 5 players namely spin wizard Rashid Khan, skipper Shubman Gill, promising talent Sai Sudharsan and hard hitting uncapped finishers, Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan. Gill had to take a pay cut since Rashid wasn’t settling as second retention choice. Sudharsan perhaps cost GT a little more since he became a capped player this year.

In 5 retentions, GT spent a total of INR 51 crores. Now, at the IPL 2025 mega auction table, GT will be left with a single RTM card and a remaining purse of INR 69 crores.

How Many Players Can GT Buy At Auction Table?

Gujarat Titans retained 5 players out of the available limit of 6, and hence, they can use 1 RTM card to buy back a released player at the IPL 2025 mega auction table. Interestingly, the maximum number of players a team can have in their squad is 25. Hence, GT can buy a minimum of 13 (7 overseas) and a maximum of 20 more players at the auction. However, given their budget, GT is unlikely to exhaust the maximum limit.

Who Should Be On GT’s Target List?

GT have a sorted core with Gill, Sudharsan and Rashid. Hence, the management might avoid going after expensive marquee players. To boost middle-order strength, GT can target wicket-keeper Ishan Kishan, Rahul Tripathi and all-rounder Liam Livingstone.

For spin, GT can target Yuzvendra Chahal, a purple cap award winner. And to boost pace attack, Nandre Burger or Trent Boult are ideal picks as the duo can wreak havoc with the new ball.

As far as the RTM card is concerned, GT should definitely go for Mohammad Shami, regardless of his injury concerns. Shami has started playing competitive cricket after a year long injury layoff and is likely to be fit for IPL 2025.

On the whole, GT possesses a sufficiently large purse for executing its auction strategy without any hiccups. Middle-order and pacer bowling are the two most discussed areas as GT gets ready to step into a crucial IPL 2025 mega auction.
