India is fresh off a T20 World Cup win under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. Immediately after the memorable trophy win after 17 years, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirements from the format of the game. In Kohli and Rohit's absence, there will be a void in the leadership group, which needs to be passed on carefully to the next generation of Indian cricket.

After the T20 World Cup, India sent a new look team to Zimbabwe for a T20I series under the leadership of Shubman Gill. Again, just before the World Cup, when Rohit Sharma was resting from the international circuit, the management handed over the leadership baton to Hardik Pandya. With the T20 World Cup 2026 about two years away, the Indian management will try and keep a core ready with a leader who has spent enough time under with the team.

Standing at this juncture and looking at the two potential leadership candidates, let us try to analyse who will be better for the future of Indian cricket.

Gill vs Pandya: IPL Captaincy Stints

Hardik Pandya made his first impression as a captain during his leadership stint with the Gujarat Titans. The team excelled under Pandya's leadership and ended as the champions in their debut IPL season. The success was not a fluke, which was proven by the fact that in the very next season, the Titans finished as the runners-up in Pandya's reign.

After this, the turn of incidents saw Pandya going back to the Mumbai Indians as their captain. However, the IPL 2024 season was not a successful one for him as Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the table.

Shubman Gill was handed over the captaincy of the Titans after Pandya's departure to MI camp. The young Indian batter got nearly the same unit as the one Pandya had, but he failed to take the team to even the playoffs.

While Pandya looks like a leader who likes to lead from the front, assigning roles to his players and trying to bring the best out of them, Gill appeared to be more concerned about his own batting performance. Hardik looked like a leader who was more accountable and responsible and tried to lead from the front. Yes, one can point out his unsuccessful stint with MI, but it was a sudden occurrence, and the team that he got was not built under his reign. He was not well accustomed to his unit and was also unclear about his own role in the side. However, Shubman Gill had a much more settled unit under his disposal but failed to repeat Pandya's success.

Gill vs Pandya: India Stint

Hardik Pandya has been at the helm of the Indian team in Rohit's absence before the T20 World Cup 2024. The team performed well under him, and Pandya looked eager to take responsibility for the performance of all the players under him. He was ready to put himself on the line if and when the team needed it.

On the other hand, during the recently concluded Zimbabwe series, Shubman Gill once again appeared to be more concerned about his own batting. Even while giving the youngsters a chance during the series, Gill was hesitant about sacrificing his spot or batting position in the lineup.

Gill vs Pandya: Effectiveness in T20Is

Hardik Pandya, as an all-rounder, will be crucial to the Indian T20 set-up for the next few years. His ability to bat under pressure and deliver in the big matches makes him a crucial part of the team. Besides his batting abilities, Pandya can also be a very efficient contributor with the ball. He can bowl the important overs, and he has done so in the T20 World Cup 2024 final.

Shubman Gill, on the other hand, has looked like a conservative batter. His T20I batting strike rate is in the 130s in an era when openers around the world are striving to score regularly at a strike rate of over 150. Gill's batting approach, in general, hampers India as a team as it refrains them from getting off to a powerful start.

In the present scenario, Pandya looks like a much more useful player for the Indian team than Shubman Gill and hence the better skipper of the Team.
