After defeating Australia in a one-sided contest at Perth, the Indian team sits at the top of the WTC points table, followed by Australia. Currently, India has a PCT of 61.11, while Australia, after losing the first Test have dropped their PCT to 57.69.
For India to safely secure their passage towards the WTC finale, they have to win 3 of the remaining four matches against the Australian side and it will guarantee them a top-two finish and hence, they won't have to depend on the other results for their WTC chances.
India were in the driving seat before the New Zealand series, but a 3-0 whitewash ruined their chances as every Test match from here on becomes a knockout match for the Rohit Sharma led side as they aim to qualify for the WTC finals for the third successive time.
If India somehow fails to win 3 more Test against the Aussies, then their fate will lie at the hands of Sri Lanka and South Africa, who are set to play a two-match Test series, starting today.
How SA Vs SL Test series will impact India?
Currently, Sri Lanka sit behind India and Australia at the third position, and if they win the series against South Africa, then their PCT will rise from 55.56 to 63.64. In such a scenario, India will need to win at-least two more Tests to guarantee themselves a top-two finish.
However, if South Africa win 2-0, their PCT will rise to 63.33, and Sri Lanka's will drop to 45.45. Meaning, South Africa will have a golden chance to qualify for the WTC finals, considering they will next face Pakistan at home.
If the series ends with a scoreline of 1-1, then Sri Lanka and South Africa will have 54.55 and 53.33 PCT%.
