Joburg Super Kings will commence their SA20 2025 campaign in match number four of the season against MI Cape Town. Marking a home fixture for the Super Kings, the match will be hosted by the iconic Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday, January 11.
The Joburg Super Kings franchise, having reached the second qualifier of SA20 2024 last year, further enhanced its squad composition with a couple of pre-season signings in the form of Jonny Bairstow, Devon Conway and Maheesh Theekshana. Led by Faf du Plessis, the Super Kings also traded in South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi.
Ahead of their opening match of the SA20 2025 season against the MI Cape Town, we look at the probable playing XI for the Joburg Super Kings, featuring a potential tournament debutant.
Devon Conway to debut, Faf du Plessis to open
New Zealand star batter Devon Conway will likely be favored over Jonny Bairstow to make his SA20 debut through Joburg Super Kings’ upcoming season opener against MI Cape Town. The 33-year-old holds a cracking strike rate of nearly 130 in T20s, and can provide fiery starts at the top of the order alongside captain and fellow opener Faf du Plessis.
Attacking top-order batter Wihan Lubbe can bat at number three, while Sibonelo Makhanya and all-rounders Moeen Ali, Donovan Ferreira and David Wiese can constitute the team’s middle-order. It is worth noting that both Ali and Ferreira will also provide additional off-spin options with the ball.
Gerald Coetzee to spearhead Super Kings pace attack
South Africa’s rising pace sensation Gerald Coetzee can spearhead the fast-bowling attack of the Joburg Super Kings. The speedster can bowl some tight overs early in the innings, and will likely operate with the new ball. Lanky paceman Hardus Viljoen can serve as Coetzee’s primary pace mate alongside fellow quick Nandre Burger.
Seasoned campaigner Imran Tahir will be expected to helm Joburg Super Kings’ spin department.
