England face-off against Afghanistan in Match 13 of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday (October 15). The defending champions, who made amends for their painstaking defeat in the tournament opener to New Zealand with a comprehensive win over Bangladesh, now lock horns with the spirited Afghans in the national capital of India.

England haven't quite played their 'A' game yet and would be determined to pick up steam by flexing their muscles against a struggling opposition side. Afghanistan have been battered and bruised in the competition so far and have no wins to show for their efforts after two matches.

The Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side was hammered by Bangladesh in Dharamshala in their opening game before suffering a mauling at the hands of tournament hosts and favourites India in Delhi.

They would hope for a drier surface than the one Delhi offered for India's fixture for their spinners to enter the contest and give England a contest.

The Feroz Shah Kotla ground, however, has been a batters' paradise in the competition and could be an ideal setting for England's explosive men.

While South Africa famously belted the hapless Sri Lankans for the highest men's World Cup score earlier in the tournament with 428/5, the Indians made an easy feast of their run-chase of 273 against the Afghans, reaching home in only 35 overs.

Historically the pitch in Delhi played dry and offered spinners grip and turn as the match progressed. Pacers used to relish the uneven nature of the bounce to make life difficult for the batters along with the breeze that aids new-ball swing. However, matches at the venue in this tournament have thrown up a complete contrast.

Keeping in mind England's great all-round depth and quality, they should pose a challenge too stiff for the Afghans to handle at this stage. The Asian dark horse side has been feeling the heat after arriving undercooked for the tournament, with just 29 ODIs played in the last four years since the 2019 World Cup in United Kingdom.
