India were shocked by the visiting New Zealand side as they thrashed the Rohit Sharma led team to go 1-0 up in the 3-match Test series. India were the firm favourites to win the contest, but the Kiwis brought their toughness on the field and won the first Test by 8 wickets.
The Indian team showed signs of overconfidence in the first game as they batted first on a seaming deck and got bundled out for a paltry 46, their third lowest total in Test cricket. Despite a resilient performance in the second innings, the demons of 46 kept haunting them as the Kiwis won the game, rather comfortably.
This was New Zealand's first Test win in India since 1988, almost after 36-years. The home side broke multiple unwanted records throughout the five days of Tests, and can break further records, if they lose the second Test as well.
3) Losing a Test series at home after 12-years
The last time India lost a Test series was way back in 2012. The Sir Alastair Cook led side toured India, and despite losing the first Test, they went onto clinch the series, 2-0. This was under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, and now Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir led side can created the unwanted record of losing a home Test series.
The Kiwis are riding high on confidence and can pull off another win in Pune.
2) Losing the first Test series against New Zealand at home
The captain-coach combo of Rohit and Gambhir can create another record if India lose the Pune Test as well. If India lose, this would be their first home series defeat against the Kiwis in the game's longest format.
Never has this happen, but India's recent performances at home suggest that New Zealand will feel confident of pulling it off.
1) Losing more than two home Tests in a year
When was the last time India lost more than two Tests at home? For that, we need to go way back to 1969, when India lost 4 Tests at home.
At home, Team India are nearly invincible, with many teams trying to breach the fortress, but no one quite succeeding. The walls of the fortress is cracking, and New Zealand can take advantage of it. In 2024, India have already lost against England once, and New Zealand recently. They'll create the unwanted record if they lose against Kiwis once again.
