3 potential captaincy replacements for Sanju Samson [Source: @mufaddal_vohra/X.Com]
Rajasthan Royals' worst fears might be coming true as Sanju Samson is set to miss the upcoming Ranji Trophy quarter finals due to an injury and is set to be on the sidelines for the next 6 weeks. The star batter suffered a fractured index finger during the 5th T20I Vs England on Sunday.
A vicious Jofra Archer delivery struck his index finger and the batter looked in some discomfort as the physio attended him. After coming back to the dressing room, his finger swelled and it was later reported that he might be on the sidelines for the next few weeks which has put his IPL participation in jeopardy.
In case he misses the upcoming IPL season, Rajasthan Royals will be without their captain. In that case, they have 3 potential choices to replace him as the leader of the team.
3) Nitish Rana
The newest acquisition of the Rajasthan Royals family, Nitish Rana has prior experience of leading Kolkata Knight Riders during the 2023 IPL season. Their skipper Shreyas Iyer missed the entire season due to a back injury and Rana stepped in to fill in the gap.
The Delhi batter was a tactical leader and brought stability in the KKR camp and the batter was also popular in the dressing room. He could be a smart choice if Samson misses the upcoming season.
2) Yashasvi Jaiswal
A surprise pick for the captaincy choice, Yashasvi Jaiswal is young and is full of energy, something which the team might need in the absence of Samson. RR don't have many captaincy choices and they could sprung a surprise by going a completely different route and instead of naming an experienced leader in Rana, the Rajasthan team could make Jaiswal their leader for the upcoming IPL season.
RR know Jaiswal is their future and the 2025 IPL season could be a stepping stone for the youngster to be groomed as the future leader.
1) Riyan Parag
Another player who has the captaincy experience, but not in the IPL. Riyan Parag has led Assam multiple times in the Ranji Trophy and has the grasp of how to lead a team. In the last season, he became their batting mainstay and Parag could translate that into his captaincy.
He, too, is dynamic, just like Jaiswal and could be an interesting choice if Samson misses IPL 2025.
