A potential thriller in Trinidad between India and hosts West Indies turned out to be a tame draw owing to ceaseless rains on Day 5. Notably, rains also washed away a combined set of 50 overs on days three and four.

After West Indies reached 76-2 by stumps on the fourth evening, no further play was possible the following day as Team India took home the two-match series by a 1-0 margin.

During the post-match presentation, winning skipper Rohit Sharma spoke about his team’s intent of enforcing a result, and praised Mohammed Siraj and Ishan Kishan for their game-turning performance in the Test match.

Sharma says Siraj has led well in Bumrah’s absence

Visiting skipper Rohit Sharma acknowledged Team India’s series win in West Indies, even though his side fell short of a clean sweep owing to deteriorating weather conditions. The dynamic opener further shed light on his team’s aggressive intent in their second innings, by stating that they wanted to set an enticing target for the hosts. After the match, he said:

“Every win is different. Playing in West Indies or in India has its own challenge. I am very happy how things went here. Unfortunately, we didn't get any play today... we actually went out with a positive intent yesterday, wanting to get a result. We were quite confident. We know how difficult it is batting last. We always wanted that kind of a score where the teams went for it. The opposition, sitting in the change room, should think we have a chance.”

Sharma further praised ‘Player of the Match’ Mohammed Siraj for his five-fer in the first innings. He claimed that the speedster has helmed the Indian pace attack exceedingly well in the absence of senior bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.

“Siraj over the years has taken a giant step in his career, how he has led the attack in the absence of Bumrah and Shami... but you don't want to depend on one or two individuals. We have played really good Test cricket, and I hope we can continue to do that.”

The Indian skipper also praised Ishan Kishan for scoring quick runs on Day 4, and claimed that the youngster justified his promotion up the order.

“We wanted quick runs, and we promoted Ishan Kishan up the order. He put his hand up, and got quick runs for us.”

India and West Indies will now clash in the subsequent ODI series, starting on July 27 in Bridgetown.
