New Zealand's young batting sensation, Rachin Ravindra, has been making waves in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023. The 23-year-old left-handed batter, who boasts an impressive 523 runs in eight matches at an average of 74.71 and a strike rate of 107.39, has already notched up three centuries and two fifties.

Gavaskar foresees new naming trend following Rachin's stellar World Cup run

His centuries came against formidable teams like England, Australia, and Pakistan, while his fifties were scored against India and the Netherlands. Alongside his batting brilliance, Rachin has also contributed with the ball, taking three wickets.

Rachin, who has Indian roots, carries a unique legacy through his name, which is a combination of the names of Indian cricketing legends Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. This naming decision by his parents reflects their admiration for these cricketing icons, a story Rachin shared in a pre-tournament interview with Star Sports.

In his first ODI World Cup appearance, Rachin has not only lived up to the legacy of Dravid and Tendulkar but has also set a new record for the most runs scored by a player in their maiden ODI World Cup. He is the first batter to hit as many as three centuries in his debut 50-over mega event.

Gavaskar's funny take on Rachin

During the tournament, after Rachin's third century against Pakistan in Bengaluru, former Indian captain and legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar lauded his performances.

On the live broadcast of the NZ vs PAK match on Star Sports, Gavaskar playfully suggested that inspired by Rachin's name, parents might now consider naming their children "Roko," combining the names of contemporary Indian cricket stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

"With how Rachin has got his name, I won't be surprised if today's parents keep their child's name Roko,” said Gavaskar.

Meanwhile, the NZ vs PAK clash was crucial for Pakistan's survival in the tournament. Despite New Zealand's formidable total of 401 runs, Pakistan, driven by Fakhar Zaman's unbeaten 126 from 81 balls, managed to stay ahead in the game.

The match, however, was cut short due to rain, with Pakistan ahead by 21 runs as per the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, marking a significant win for the Men in Green.
