In a stunning display of cricketing brilliance, the Indian team, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, clinched their eighth victory in the World Cup 2023 by defeating South Africa with a massive margin of 243 runs at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Sunday, November 5.

Zaheer Khan applauds Rohit Sharma's tactical genius as captain

Former Indian cricketer Zaheer Khan, in his analysis on Crizbuzz, lauded Rohit for his exceptional behind-the-scenes work and preparation that has been crucial to his captaincy.

According to Zaheer, Rohit's approach involves extensive discussions with team members and support staff, preparing them for various on-field scenarios. This meticulous preparation, Zaheer observed, has become a defining aspect of Rohit's leadership style.

“He is someone who likes to work behind the scenes. So, what you are seeing on the pitch is the preparation, which is very important with regards to his captaincy. He likes spending time with all the guys, talking to the support staff and players, discussing various scenarios. That has been the hallmark of how he approaches the game,” said Zaheer.

Zaheer also admired Rohit's ability to remain composed under pressure. He noted that while Rohit may occasionally appear animated on the field, this does not reflect any pressure he might be feeling. Instead, the former speedster reckoned that Rohit's calm demeanour along with his instinct-driven decision-making has been instrumental in his successful captaincy.

“What I like about him is that he is very calm under pressure. He might be animated at times, but that doesn’t mean he is feeling the pressure. He is very calm in terms of backing his instincts while making the decisions,” added the Indian veteran.

Zaheer further highlighted Rohit's natural drive and focus on team success, which have been key factors in his ability to win trophies. According to him, the 36-year-old's leadership has been crucial in keeping the team focused and driven, as evident in the current campaign where he has effectively communicated the team's approach.

“He has been winning trophies and that is something which comes naturally to him, that drive is there to think of the team and he knows to win tournaments. To achieve that, you have got to get everyone switched on. He has done a terrific job of doing that, leading up to this campaign, defining what kind of approach the team should have,” concluded Zaheer.

Coming to the game, batting first, India set a formidable target of 326 runs at the loss of five wickets in their 50 overs. This impressive total was bolstered by Virat Kohli's remarkable 49th ODI century and a valuable 77-run contribution from Shreyas Iyer.

In the South African innings, Ravindra Jadeja's outstanding five-wicket haul was instrumental in dismissing the South African team for a mere 83 runs in 27.1 overs.
