'Why Bother With The Finals At All...,' Aakash Chopra Makes A Big Statement On WTC Final

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra believes that the winner of the World Test Championship (WTC) should be decided via a three-match series instead of a one-off final.

Chopra's comments came on a day when the World Test Championship final kicked off between India and Australia at the Kia Oval on Wednesday.

Taking to his Twitter account, Chopra said that it is difficult to take a one-off final seriously given that the cycle runs for a period of two years.

He also added that if the ICC can't accommodate a three-match final, then there is no point in playing a one-off, suggesting that the team that tops the points table at the end of the two-year cycle should be declared the winner.

"Find it really uncomfortable that you are okay to have a championship spread over two years but can’t find time for a three-test series at the end of the 24-month cycle. While everybody claims that it’s the Ultimate Format, nobody has the time to give the respect it deserves,” Chopra tweeted.

“If you can’t accommodate three-tests, why bother with the finals at all? The team that has topped the table over 2-years should be given the mace, as it used to be the case earlier. In any case, there’s no uniformity in terms of how many Tests each series should have,” Chopra added.

Meanwhile, Australia have taken total control of the ongoing final after they were invited to bat first by Rohit Sharma.

India struck early as Mohammad Siraj nicked off Usman Khawaja for a duck, but they couldn't build on it as David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne weathered the early storm to take the score to 71.

Both fell in quick succession on either side of Lunch, but since then, Travis Head and Steve Smith have added 108 unbeaten runs for the 4th wicket to take the score to 184/3.
