With the Champions Trophy just a few days away, excitement is at its peak as teams gear up for glory. Team India is set to battle it out in Dubai, but a major concern looms. Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s shaky form has now become a huge concern before the marquee event.
For months, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has battled a rough patch, sparking debates about his future. Before stepping into the big stage. Former Indian captain Kapil Dev shared a candid and insightful opinion on Rohit Sharma.
Rohit Sharma’s Ongoing Struggle
For quite some time now, the cricket world has missed witnessing the vintage ‘Hitman Show’ as the Indian skipper is struggling with his form. In his last 10 international innings, Rohit Sharma’s highest score is 18. He scored his last half-century in October 2024. After that, the Indian skipper’s bat remained quiet.
Rohit Sharma’s struggles continued in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and carried into the Ranji Trophy, where he failed to regain form. Before stepping into the Champions Trophy, Team India faced England in their final ODI assignment but his woes persist. In the first ODI of the series, he was dismissed scoring only 2 runs. Before the marquee event, his off-form becomes a concern for the Indian side.
Kapil Dev On Rohit Sharma’s Ongoing Struggle
Before stepping into the Champions Trophy, Team India has two more ODI encounters and those will be extremely crucial for the Indian captain. Kapil Dev delivered a blunt message to Rohit Sharma ahead of the Champions Trophy.
“He is a big player. I hope he returns to form quickly. I will say good luck to the coach. It takes time to settle in. The whole country is looking forward to the side's performance. In the recent times, the side played well for some time. The team looks unsettled. When the captain's form is poor, the team has problems.” Kapil Dev said.
“The team has not done well, it's justified that the fans are angry. When these players came back after winning the T20 World Cup, the crazy scenes, I have never seen in my life. So, when they do bad, criticism follows. That's what I say, don't praise the players so much, that they can't handle. And then criticise them below the belt. This is my thought.” he added.
Kapil Dev On Jasprit Bumrah
Along with captain Rohit Sharma’s shaky form, Team India has another big concern. After sustaining a back injury in the fifth Test against Australia back in January, Jasprit Bumrah is still out of cricket action. Despite being in the squad for the ODI series against England, he was removed from the squad later, leaving his Champions Trophy participation uncertain. Speaking on the issue, former captain Kapil Dev stated that if Bumrah isn’t fully fit, it will significantly impact the team.
"There is no doubt about that. In the last two years, no other fast bowler has had so much impact. When a big player like Bumrah, Anil Kumble, gets unfit, it does impact the team. I hope he recovers soon enough." he said.
After 2017, the prestigious Champions Trophy is coming back and Team India is set to start their journey on February 20 against Bangladesh. On February 23, the entire cricket world is eagerly waiting to see another chapter of cricket’s biggest rivalry as India will take on Pakistan in Dubai.
