Ravichandran Ashwin has never been one to sit on the fence and this time too, the former India off-spinner has called a spade a spade. Reacting to Bihar’s colossal 574-run effort in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Arunachal Pradesh, Ashwin praised the batters for cashing in but also raised a bigger, uncomfortable question about the widening gap in India’s domestic cricket.

The runs were massive. The records were shattered. But Ravichandran Ashwin felt there was more beneath the surface than just applause and highlight reels.

The Indian veteran made it clear that while individual brilliance deserves credit, the overall contest left him uneasy.

“Huge applause for Vaibhav Suryavanshi. But I again want to ask a question. There is a huge divide, chalk and cheese, in terms of quality with some teams. It becomes very lop-sided with some teams and there is no contest at all. It is not an ideal contest,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

He stressed that Suryavanshi and others did exactly what was expected of them. No complaints there but Ashwin felt such one-sided games do little to help the weaker sides grow.

“If we are serious about teams like Arunachal Pradesh becoming good sides, what will this do to their confidence?” he added.

Bihar go berserk in Vijay Hazare Trophy

The comments came after Bihar went on an absolute rampage in their Plate Group match. Teen sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, wicketkeeper Ayush Loharuka, and skipper Sakibul Gani all smashed centuries as Bihar posted 574 runs in 50 overs, the highest total ever in men’s List A cricket.

It was batting carnage of the highest order. Bowlers were put to the sword, boundaries flowed, records crumbled. But the contest itself was over long before the innings ended. That imbalance is what worried Ashwin the most.

Credit where it’s due for Suryavanshi

Ashwin was careful not to take anything away from the young stars lighting up the tournament. In fact, he went out of his way to praise Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

“Credit to Vaibhav for his performance. He is doing what he has to do,” Ashwin said.

From Ashwin’s point of view, the issue isn’t about stopping players from scoring big. It’s about ensuring domestic cricket remains competitive enough to test both batters and bowlers.

Because flat tracks and weak attacks can inflate numbers, but they don’t always build cricketers.

The bigger picture

Ashwin’s comments weren’t an attack. They were a reality check. Indian domestic cricket has depth, but the quality gap between teams is growing. When matches turn into no-contests, development takes a hit.

Big scores will grab headlines., teen prodigies will trend. But as Ashwin hinted, the real win lies in competitive cricket that sharpens everyone involved. Otherwise, some teams keep scoring runs for fun, while others are left chasing shadows.
