In a recent turn of events, Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis expressed regret over a miscommunication regarding Virat Kohli's remarkable achievement of scoring his 49th ODI century during the World Cup 2023. Star Indian batter, celebrating his 35th birthday, achieved this milestone with an unbeaten 101 in a match against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The confusion arose during a press conference on November 5th when an Indian journalist asked Mendis if he would like to congratulate Kohli on his 49th century. In response, Mendis questioned the need for congratulations, leading to some confusion. However, in a recent conference, Mendis clarified his stance.

Here's what Kusal Mendis said:

"During the press conference, I wasn't aware that Kohli scored his 49th Hundred, when journalist suddenly asked, I don't know what to say & I didn't understand the question as well - scoring 49 hundreds is not easy - what I said was wrong, I am feeling for it. "

While Mendis expressed remorse over the miscommunication, Sri Lanka's overall performance at the World Cup was marred by inconsistency, suffering seven defeats in nine matches. Their recent loss to New Zealand, coupled with their failure to qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
