Australia, under Pat Cummins, slumped to their second successive big defeat this 2023 World Cup by going down against South Africa in Lucknow. Chasing a monumental 312 to register their opening points of the tournament, Proteas’ speedsters Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen scythed through Australia’s top-order with relentless pace and swing upfront.

After his side fell 134 runs short of their target, Australian captain Pat Cummins admitted that they were comprehensively outplayed by the South Africans in all aspects of the game.

‘Everyone’s hurting…’ Pat Cummins after defeat to SA

After the Australian defeat, skipper Pat Cummins praised South African opener Quinton de Kock for his sublime century earlier in the game. The legendary paceman also claimed that his side was happy in restricting the Proteas to 311 upfront, deeming the total as a chaseable one under lights. During the post-match presentation, Cummins said:

“I thought Quinton de Kock batted really well, couldn’t get a breakthrough. From where they were, we were quite happy with 310, thought it was chaseable. Looked like hard work out there tonight, their bowlers bowled really well, think it nipped around a bit more under lights.”

Pat Cummins was also asked if he was lamenting his decision of chasing in the match. The bowling veteran stated that as a unit, they will be looking to perform better in the coming days, regardless of batting first or second. The Australian captain also added that “everyone’s hurting” within the camp, and they will try to regroup in time for their next World Cup 2023 challenge against Sri Lanka.

“Really hard to say, if we want to be challenging in this tournament we need to find ways of performing regardless of batting first or second. Don’t think much needs to be said tonight, everyone’s hurting, we’ll try and take a couple of days off and then make amends to come back stronger in the next one. There’s a few things we need to tidy up.”

With two big defeats from two outings, Australia will now go up against Sri Lanka on October 16 for their subsequent World Cup 2023 outing. The much-awaited contest will be played out at the same Lucknow venue.
