Suryakumar Yadav, in his maiden series as Indian captain, led his side to a tense win over Australia in Bengaluru to complete a 4-1 routing of their guests. While the cricketer failed to make much impact with the bat in the game, he expressed his elation at team’s comprehensive all-round performance.

After the match, Suryakumar claimed that his team played fearless cricket throughout the series and he is happy to take the 4-1 result at the end of the proceedings.

Suryakumar Yadav says players played freely

Speaking at the post-match presentation, stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav expressed his delight at Team India’s comprehensive all-round performance over Australia throughout the course of their five-match series.

The 33-year-old added that he told his players to play freely and express themselves through fearless cricket. He said:

“It was a good series in the end. To win it 4-1, I think, the boys have done well. Absolutely, we wanted to be fearless and I told them to play freely as they would normally. I told them to enjoy ourselves when we were in the middle. So, very happy with that.”

Batting first in the fifth T20I, Team India amounted to 160-8 courtesy of Shreyas Iyer’s anchoring act and Axar Patel’s clobbering death-overs fury. Captain Suryakumar described the Bengaluru surface as a tricky wicket to bat on, and deemed his side’s 160-run total as a par score.

The T20I veteran further claimed that he always believed his bowlers can make a match of the total. He added:

“It was a tricky wicket to bat on. I have seen the games where the first innings score was 200-220 have been easy to chase down. The score of 160-170 was just about par. At the halfway through the second innings, I said to the boys, we have a game on.”

The Bengaluru result marks an end to India’s gruelling home season, as they will now head to South African for an all-format challenge later this week.

Suryakumar Yadav will continue to lead the ‘Men in Blue’ in the T20I segment of the tour, which is set to commence on December 10 in Durban.
