India are currently playing a Test series in England with a new team under Shubman Gill, following the retirements of Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin and Rohit Sharma. The Men in Blue recently won their first-ever Test at Edgbaston, and since then, there have been rumours that Shubman Gill will replace Rohit Sharma as ODI captain too.
BCCI Vice-President Confirms Availability Of Rohit And Kohli In ODIs
Some reports have also suggested that there are doubts over Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's ODI future, and the team is looking to go in a new direction after the Champions Trophy 2025. However, Rajeev Shukla, the BCCI Vice-President, in an interview to ANI has now confirmed that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are available for ODIs.
The BCCI veteran also stated that the board never forces anyone to retire, as has been assumed in the case of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's Test retirement. He confirmed that Rohit and Virat made their own decision to retire, and the board is also feeling the absence of both players. He added that Kohli, Rohit are great cricketers and will continue to be available for the ODIs.
"We are all feeling the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The decision to retire made by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli was their own. It is the policy of BCCI that we never tell any player to retire...We will always consider them as great batsmen. They will be available for ODIs," Rajeev Shukla said while speaking to ANI.
Thus, Rajeev Shukla has not commented on the rumours of Shubman Gill taking over the leadership in ODIs. However, following India's recent win in the Champions Trophy, there is a high probability that Rohit Sharma will continue to lead India, and will play in the World Cup 2027 alongside Virat Kohli.
