Former South African cricketer and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) player AB de Villiers expressed his disappointment regarding Team India's decision to exclude leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal from the 17-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023.

Team India unveiled their 17-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, which starts on August 21, and the omission of Yuzvendra Chahal surprised many. Chahal was part of the squad during the three-match ODI series against the West Indies in July-August. However, he didn't find a place in the playing XI for any of those matches. Instead, Kuldeep Yadav was the sole frontline spinner, supported by Ravindra Jadeja's left-arm orthodox spin.

Following his omission from the Asia Cup squad, Chahal's absence has garnered criticism from a section of the cricket community.

Having played alongside Chahal at RCB, ABD understands the wicket-taking ability that the leg-spinner brings to the team. De Villiers acknowledges the selection of Kuldeep and Axar Patel, but he believes that a skillful leg-spinner like Chahal is a valuable asset for any limited-overs team.

"Chahal has been dropped, selectors making their intentions clear who they will be picking. It's a bit of disappointing drop for me, Yuzi is always very handy and it's great to have the leg-spinning option in your team. We know how skillful he is,"  AB de Villiers said on his official YouTube channel.

Chahal's absence is also notable in the Asian Games 2023 squad, where spin alternatives Shahbaz Ahmed, Ravi Bishnoi, and Washington Sundar have been favored. Numerous former cricketers and cricket experts, including Harbhajan Singh, Sourav Ganguly, Madan Lal, and Karsan Ghavri, have diverse viewpoints regarding Chahal's omission from the Asia Cup squad.
