On March 29, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced a crushing 50-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), but what grabbed the most attention wasn’t the loss itself—it was MS Dhoni’s batting position. The former CSK captain walked in to bat at No. 9 and played an unbeaten knock of 30 runs off 16 balls. However, by the time he arrived at the crease, the match was almost out of CSK’s hands, making his efforts largely insignificant.
Fans and cricket experts were left puzzled and frustrated by Dhoni’s late entry, especially since players like Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, and even Ravichandran Ashwin batted ahead of him. Over the past few seasons, Dhoni has reduced his time at the crease, often coming in during the final overs. However, many felt that he should have batted earlier in this match, given CSK’s situation.
Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag, known for his sharp wit, gave a humorous twist to the debate. During a discussion on Cricbuzz, he joked that Dhoni actually came in “early” this time, as he usually bats only in the last two overs of an innings. Sehwag laughed, saying,
“Jaldi aa gaye! (He came early!) He usually bats in the 19th or 20th over, but today, he came in the 16th over, so that’s early for him!” He further added that Dhoni and his team have a clear strategy; he will only bat for a limited number of balls, no matter when the team loses wickets.
According to Sehwag, CSK has already decided that Dhoni will not take on too many deliveries, and his batting position won’t change. “Whether they lose wickets early or late, he’ll come in around the 17th-18th over. Today, he just happened to be two overs early," he said with a chuckle.
Even though Dhoni’s 30 off 16 balls included three boundaries and two massive sixes in the final over, it wasn’t enough to chase down RCB’s stiff target of 197. However, despite CSK’s loss, there was one big positive for Dhoni; he became the highest run-scorer in CSK’s history.
