'Virat Is Not Going To Get Tendulkar's...' - Ex Australia Great Opens Up On 100 Century Debate
Virat Kohli in action [BCCI]
Virat Kohli has long been regarded as one of India’s premier batters in Test cricket. Known for his resilience and sheer determination, Kohli has accumulated an impressive record in the longest format of the game. However, in recent years, his form has taken a dip, particularly in Test cricket. As his average in this format has declined, questions have emerged about whether Kohli can achieve the seemingly unachievable – breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most runs in Test history.
Tendulkar, widely regarded as one of the finest batters in cricket history, holds the record for the most runs in Test cricket. His 15,921 Test runs are a monumental achievement, and for decades, this record has been considered untouchable.
However, with modern-day batters inching closer to Tendulkar’s milestone, former Australian spinner Brad Hogg weighed in on whether Kohli could reach this coveted milestone.
Brad Hogg On Kohli’s Chances To Go Past Tendulkar
Brad Hogg recently shared his thoughts on Kohli's chances of surpassing Tendulkar’s record. According to Hogg, Kohli’s recent struggles with form suggest that this feat is unlikely. The Indian batter’s dip in momentum has persisted for several years, leading Hogg to believe that the window for Kohli to reach the record may be closing.
"I don't think Virat is going to get there now. I just don't think Virat is going to get there. I think he's lost his momentum and the momentum that he's lost has been for a number of years now. He's got to turn around in the next 10 Test matches, or he's going to drop off," Hogg commented on his YouTube channel.
Kohli has amassed 8,871 runs in 193 innings, with a highest score of 254*. While these numbers are outstanding by any measure, they pale in comparison to Tendulkar’s 15,921 runs, which include 51 centuries and 68 fifties.
Brad Hogg On Joe Root’s Pursuit Of Tendulkar's Record
Hogg also weighed in on England’s Joe Root, who is much closer to potentially breaking Tendulkar’s record. With 12,402 runs in 146 Test matches, Root is rapidly approaching the Indian legend’s tally. Hogg believes Root has a strong chance of surpassing Tendulkar in the future.
"So, Joe Root has 146 Test matches with 12,000 runs. Sachin Tendulkar made nearly 16,000 runs in 200 Test matches. That's 4,000 runs in 66 Tests. I think Joe Root can go close to toppling that," he said.
"I think it's going to be something to watch. Watch out, Joe Root is on the move to beat Sachin Tendulkar. I think quietly he'll have that in the back of his mind to try and topple that little unique stat," he concluded.
Joe Root has been in sensational form this year, amassing 986 runs in 11 innings with a strike rate of 58.97. As England's upcoming fixture, a series of three-Test matches against Pakistan and later against New Zealand, draws near, the excitement mounts as Root aims to inch closer to Sachin's record.
