'Umpires Didn't Know What Was Going': Labuschagne On Stoinis' Controversial Dismissal

In an unexpected fashion, Australia went on to lose their second consecutive ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 tie as well on Thursday, suffering a 134-run loss to South Africa.

South Africa were all over Australia at EKANA Stadium in Lucknow and displayed all-round skills against hapless-looking opponents. Apart from lacklustre performance from Australian players, several on-field decisions were also dubious, which added to the side's poor outing, which included the highly controversial Marcus Stoinis' dismissal.

Stoinis' was given caught behind after South Africa's DRS appeal, where replays suggested that the all-rounder's top hand came off the bat's handle, but was still in contact with the left hand when the ball brushed his gloves.

Marnus Labuschagne, who witnessed the fiasco first-hand in the middle, explained that the on-field umpires had no clue.

As quoted by India Today, speaking in the post-match presser, Labuschagne explained why Stoinis and himself waited on the field for clarification despite the DRS call being in South Africa's favour.

Here's what Labuschagne said

"Look, the umpires really didn't know what was going on. They just saw what we saw, so it wasn't really too much going on. I mean, for me, it looked like, and I was on field, I can't see, but it looked like his hand was off the bat, it hit the glove.

And so, because they didn't go to the side-on angle, Marcus and I were just asking, have they checked? Because they just saw the spike from the front on, and they didn't sort of get a close-up zoom in of the side. Well, sorry, not one that we had. And that just looked like there was clear daylight between the two gloves and the handle,”

Australia will next play Sri Lanka on October 16 in Lucknow and will hope to finally get a win on the board.
