KL Rahul emerged as the hero for India in the ongoing Centurion Test against South Africa, earning high praise from cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar. Battling adverse conditions, a green surface, and an imposing South African bowling attack, Rahul's century has been hailed by Gavaskar as one of the top 10 best hundreds in India's Test cricket history.

Facing a challenging situation at 121/6, Rahul, playing in his first Test as a designated wicketkeeper and in a middle-order role, showcased exceptional form and composure.

He weathered the storm and propelled India to a respectable total of 245, scoring a brilliant 101 runs off 137 balls. His innings included 14 stylish fours and four commanding sixes, marking a flawless performance.

Gavaskar, who observed the masterclass from the commentary box, expressed his admiration, stating,

“I have been watching cricket for 50 years, and I can surely say this hundred by Rahul is in the top 10 in the Indian history of Tests.”

Highlighting the challenging pitch conditions, Gavaskar commended Rahul for playing a knock that showcased confidence and adaptability.

KL Rahul's century in Centurion holds added significance as he became only the second-ever Asian designated wicketkeeper, after Rishabh Pant in 2022, to achieve a Test hundred in South Africa. The innings were a testament to Rahul's versatility and ability to perform in different roles within the team.

On day one of the Boxing Day Test, Rahul, coming in at No.6, not only prevented an early collapse but also collaborated with the lower order to rescue India. After day one at 70, Rahul displayed an attacking approach on the second day, reaching his century quickly.

Gavaskar, who was on air in the Hindi commentary box when Rahul completed his hundred, lauded the achievement, stating,

“Because this is a different kind of pitch. Here, a batter would never have the confidence that he is set. The ball can do anything anytime. Playing such a knock despite that, especially today; he was unbeaten on 70 yesterday but only had Siraj and Prasidh Krishna for company today.”

Rahul's remarkable feat in Centurion is not his first in the venue, having scored a century in the previous tour in 2021-22. Gavaskar drew a parallel between Rahul's back-to-back centuries in Centurion and Dilip Vengsarkar's dominance at Lord's, emphasizing that Rahul has earned the title of the 'Centurion of Centurion.'

In conclusion, India eventually concluded their innings at 245, and South Africa, in response, was at 123/3, with Dean Elgar holding the crease with well made 75.
