The Indians fans are over the moon as both men’s and women’s both are locking horns in some thrilling contests. While the Men’s Asia Cup keeps the excitement alive, the buzz is only getting bigger because the Women’s ODI World Cup is just around the corner.
As the Tigresses fine-tune their game in the final stretch of preparation, Team India’s Test skipper Shubman Gill couldn’t hold back his admiration for Smriti Mandhana. Drawing parallels to Australian legend, she hailed Mandhana’s brilliance.
Shubman Gill is in awe of Mandhana’s brilliance
The Women’s ODI World Cup is back for its 13th edition, and Indian fans are in for a treat as the marquee event is going to take place on Indian soil, along with Sri Lanka. Ahead of stepping into the team, the home side is ready to conquer, but Smriti Mandhana’s fiery form has been a massive boost for the side.
In the last ODI series against Australia, Smriti Mandhana smashed two outstanding tons along with a brilliant half-century and scored 300 runs in three matches. As the women are ready to step into the big stage, Team India’s Test skipper Shubman Gill compared her with Australian legend Damien Martyn and praised her mindset and techniques.
“I think it’s kind of like Damien Martyn, the way she plays. She has that slow, lazy elegance. Technique is something that gets you through tough phases. When you’re under pressure or facing a difficult situation, it really helps,” Gill said.
Is there any advice from Captain Gill’s side?
Over the years, Smriti Mandhana has grown into the backbone of India’s batting lineup. With her presence vital on the big stage, her blazing form could prove to be a true game-changer. As Gill was asked if he had any advice for the star batter, Gill’s answer won hearts.
“She’s been doing incredibly well to keep up with expectations. I wouldn’t give her any advice — just tell her to be herself and continue doing what she’s doing,” he added.
As the India Women gear up for the World Cup, their warm-up campaign began on a disappointing note with a heavy 153-run loss to England Women. With key stars like Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur sitting out, the Women in Blue couldn’t find their rhythm. On September 27, they will face New Zealand Women in the second warm-up game.
