Pakistan clinched a thrilling six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in Match 8 of World Cup 2023 at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

With this crucial win, they now have made it two wins in a row and hold the second position in the points table, trailing only behind New Zealand.

Rizwan's heroics seal win for Pakistan vs Sri Lanka

The star performer for Pakistan was Mohammad Rizwan, who played a stellar knock, scoring 131 runs off 121 deliveries, a knock filled with eight boundaries and three maximums. Rizwan's century came under significant pressure, making it even more commendable in a game of such magnitude.

Expressing his views after the game in the post-match presentation, Rizwan conveyed immense pride in delivering for his nation. He mentioned the initial difficulties faced, especially the early loss of their skipper, Babar Azam.

However, he highlighted the team's collective confidence and the pivotal partnership with Abdullah Shafique, who marked his World Cup debut with an impressive score. While recalling his innings, Rizwan also humorously noted the occasional bouts of cramps amidst his play.

“Always a proud moment for me whenever you perform for your country. I am speechless at this moment. It was difficult. The thing was that after the bowling innings we went back and everyone was confident. Unluckily, they got Babar Azam early but we got good partnerships after that. It's a good track, was supporting to us. I told Shafique to take it step by step. Sometimes cramps and sometimes acting (chuckles)."

Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka set a formidable target of 344/9. Pakistan's chase got off to a rocky start, losing two crucial wickets, Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam, early on, both victims of the Sri Lankan pacer, Dilshan Madushanka, leaving Pakistan in disarray at 37/2.

The situation seemed dire until Shafique and Rizwan combined forces, stitching together a game-changing 176-run partnership. Although Shafique departed after scoring a commendable 113, Rizwan persevered to ensure Pakistan's crossed the line with six wickets to spare.
