Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh went ballistic against Team India selectors over their T20 World Cup 2026 squad announcement. Yograj Singh questioned the dropping of India’s vice-captain Shubman Gill from the group, alleging that the blistering right-handed batter has been excluded for ‘far too less’.

Yograj also cited certain level of favoritism among the Indian selectors, and took a dig at former captain Kapil Dev by claiming that the legendary all-rounder received too many opportunities during his playing days.

Yograj Singh backs Shubman Gill

While speaking to journalist Ravish Bisht, Yograj Singh questioned the Indian selectors for dropping vice-captain Shubman Gill from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 team.

The former cricketer believes that while Shubman Gill merely failed in four to five innings, there have been Indian players in the past who have received countless opportunities in the national playing XI despite under-performing.

Yograj Singh said, "Shubman Gill is a vice-captain. What is the reason behind dropping him? Just because he failed in 4-5 innings? Indian cricketers have had so many players who have barely managed to perform in 10 matches out of 100 opportunities.

"They still played; you already know the reason why. Young Abhishek Sharma arrived a couple of years ago. If he fails four innings will you drop him as well?" he further added.

Yograj also took this opportunity to take a dig at former all-rounder and 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev, recalling a tour of Pakistan where he failed with both bat and ball but still managed to find a place in the team under the leadership of Bishan Singh Bedi.

He stated, “Let me give you an example of the ‘great’ Kapil Dev. When we toured Pakistan with Bishan Singh Bedi as captain, Kapil Dev continued to play matches despite failing with bat and ball. But Bishan Singh Bedi still took him on the subsequent tour of England.”

Contrary to Yograj Singh’s claims, Shubman Gill failed to notch up a single half-century in India’s entire home T20I series against South Africa, as well as during the entirety of eight-match white-ball tour of Australia a couple of months ago.

With the likes of Sanju Samson waiting in the wings, Shubman Gill also had an underwhelming Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE.
